Three sculptors, a performance artist and a tattoo artist discuss their work. Mini lectures again provide terms and critical contextual understanding of three-dimensional object making across time and cultures. The final sections of the Unit explore the making of pastels and include a discussion of glass and clay as mediums for both craft and high art.
New questions and issues arise. As artists explore new forms of sculpture, create installations, assemblages and perform themselves as the art object --- does our definition of art change?
In Unit One we inquired into meanings for the term: art. Students reflected on possibilities in a written assignment. The issue is pursued again in Unit Four. In this Assignment students focus on objects which while revealing their own traditions of carving, masquerade, weaving, hide tanning, pigment use, etc. they differ significantly from mediums traditionally used and valued in Europe.
